Hey, I read your article on "Is a Chicano the same thing as a Mexican?" or something like that. It was really helpful, thanks. I would have gone around calling people "spanish" forever, though I know that's wrong. I think I'm going to continue not mentioning people's ethnic background at all, though, unless it's significant. Si ud puede ayudar por favor comuniquese Gracias de antemano. connie <almademexico_at_msn.com> los angeles, ca USA - Sunday, August 15, 2004 at 09:05:52 4.233.23.119 - dialup-4.233.23.119.dial1.losangeles1.level3.net 419 bella419 <bella_at_419.com> 419lome, 419 USA - Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 21:27:28 80.248.64.50 - cache.cafe.tg Here is today's comment, I hope I find someone who shares this toughts I grew up in Mexico, today I am a naturalized us citizen, every day 3 persons die trying to cross the border trought the desert, this is real people, let's do something about it, the border patrol has minimal guilt in this let's put the blame of this deaths in the mexican" government who pushes its own people to its own death and does nothing to stop it, in the meantime the rich class in mexico enjoys the benefits of the money trough taxes and bribes we the true mexicans sent. any comments on the subject are apprecciated on this great website. roberto <rius011969_at_yahoo.com> san diego, ca USA - Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 07:46:00 204.96.196.130 - Muchas veces pienso que somos pocos los que nos sentimos orgullosos de nuestra sangre, me da tanto gusto ver que no es asi. I am proud to represent them! I have to admit among ourselves we are racist with our own people more than other races but you know that comes from because we fear what we do not know. Ignorance also play part in this. We have to educate ourselves and our children about our past, present and future. This is a great website, now that I reading various pages in it! Como mexicana que soy les doy las gracias for having a site to educate people! I do consider myself Mexicana, not latina, or hispanic. I am part india- mixtec, zapotec,- spanish, french! Percentages I do not know and do not care. I am who I am and that is what matters. I come from Oaxaca. No? This is the first one I've seen that focuses on the indigenous, I hope to see more because this part of our ancestry is often ignored. I also think it's importnat to know the background of some labeling terms like "hispanic" (Ronald Reagan)and "latino" (a generalizer often used by people too lazy to take the time to identify our unique ethnicities). I personally prefer "Chicana" to "Mexican American" because of what I learned about these terms. Mexican American was most used by peple seeking to assimilate to the Euro/AngloAmerican mainstream. I, for one, am a proud Chicana who acknowledges my European roots but embraces my indigenous core and alma. Everyone, please keep searching for more information about our cultura so that we never forget or are stripped of our language, stories, art again. To be hispanic really means to be from Spain. Latinos means Latin, but the Latins are the Southern European culture that includes Italy, Spain, Portugal ,And France. How did "Latin America" get its name? It was colonized by the Latin oppressor (duh). Raza means race, but the context of its use is to describe the new meztizo heritage, which in itself is a lie. Our history as a people means that we come from the same Indian roots as the American Native Americans. The native americans are aware that we come from them and they come from us. It's just the Mexican who doesn't know this. I do not embraze the Spanish conquest. I am three fourths Indian and only one forth Spanish/Europeon. This Mexican will never say that everything is alright with us. Most Mexicans only think of the immediate situation and do not look at things as in the whole scope. Most of us take one day at a time and live from one pay check to another. I do not like that Mexicans do not consider themselves to be fully related to the Native Americans. We are native to this land too. It's time for history to be rewritten and told the truth about who and what we truly are. I am not Hispanic or Latino. I am Azteca/Yaqui and proud of it! My people didn't come from Hispanola. Those are labels that the white man has given us as identification of ethnicity. I do not accept this just because they want to call me this. I will determine what I am and how I should be addressed. Get it right. Know your history. Our people have been on this continent since before Jesus was born. That's how far back we go.
